Chapter 9

So, here I was. Only three days into the week and I had learned that I was some kind of magic being. Had been kidnapped by werewolves. Was sharing a space with a sort of werewolf. And the icing on the cake? Being hunted by evil snaky smoke creatures! What was it that Selma had said, "Get into some trouble while I'm gone."

I pulled some sheets, a pillow and a towel out of my cedar chest for Lucie, put them on the sofa, showed her where the bathroom was and headed for my bedroom and my bed. Before I was completely knocked out, I heard Lucie in the shower and wondered, for as long as she was running the water, if there'd be any hot water left at all for me. As dirty and smelly as she was, after living with Lucky's pack for so long, I'm sure the shower was a rare luxury for her. But since I was too tired to take a shower anyway, I closed my eyes and decided that mine could wait until morning and more hot water. I opened one eye, however, to check the sky outside for a full moon. I relaxed when I saw just a crescent.

Friday rolled around and Lucie came to work with me. It was one of those rainy LA days when everything smells fresh and almost new and the ping of nighttime raindrops lulls you to sleep. Everyone was in slickers or under umbrellas or simply bouncing from studio to office to commissary, avoiding the rain. Not Lucie. She strolled the lot oblivious, it seemed, to the rain, soaking my tee shirt and sweats—the only thing of mine that fit without making her "brick outhouse" body, as BossMan had called it—look like it was encased in spandex. When she returned to my space at about noon, BossMan was with her.

"Lotta!" he said trying to sound authoritative and concerned at the same time. "Your friend here is soaked. Found her wandering around the studio. Like she was lost."

Lucie turned and flashed him a smile. "Oh, no, Mr. Clemmons. I wasn't lost. Just strolling around. Enjoying the rain."

"How can anybody enjoy the rain getting soaked." It was a statement, not a question to which he expected an answer since he knew the answer. Because he didn't enjoy walking in the rain, he assumed that since he
